Skiing with a Twist on New Year’s Eve

The Northern Wasatch Back has so many hidden secrets and I discovered one on New Year’s Eve.  The Hideout at Scare Canyon is a dream location for someone looking for a spot that is off the beaten path but reasonably accessible.  Located off Highway 39 on the way to Monte Cristo, The Hideout is a 2200 acre master planned cabin community where you can own your own mountain.  The development consists of 49 parcels that are each 40 acres.  The twist to this project that makes it very appealing is a community easement on each parcel that allows recreation use on the entire 2200 acres.

I toured the project with the developer John Lewis and a few clients from the east coast.  Blue skies prevailed as we gathered all our gear into a sleigh, hopped onto easy to drive snowmobiles, and headed out from the Monte Cristo snowmobile trailhead 12 miles east of Huntsville.  Within 30 minutes we were atop one of the project ridges where we unloaded our skis and prepared for some unique back-country skiing.

The snow was consistently creamy and the slopes open with trackless powder as far as we could see.  Off we went, whooping and hollering from start to finish.  Our guides were waiting at the bottom where we jumped on the snowmobile for a lift back to the top.  Two more runs and we were ready for lunch!

The Hideout offers hundreds of acres of this type skiing along with snowmobile fields, snowshoe and cross-country skiing.  It’s only accessible by snow machine in the winter but the rest of the year well graded roads deliver owners to their cabins where they can hike, mountain bike, horseback ride, fish, hunt and use ATV’s.

It’s hard to believe the canyon and ranch are only 40 minutes from the Ogden Valley and less than 1 ½ from the Salt Lake International Airport.  What a day-can’t wait to go back in the summer!
